The duration after a woman has given birth is usually filled with emotions which can at times be depressing. New mothers have often reported mixed feelings of joy, sadness and fear in the same day. Most women are able to weather these emotions successfully and emerge from the postpartum period. There are those that require help while some do it on their own. This is worth knowing about Ayurveda Postpartum.

Some new mothers have a hard time going through the period after birth because of the emotions they experience. Some develop and condition referred to as postpartum depression, often shortened as PPD. PPD is a condition that occurs when a new mother experiences feelings of sadness that are so severe that they start interfering with their everyday life.

After giving birth, it may take a few weeks for symptoms of PPD to start showing. In most cases, the condition develops fast, but in some, it takes up to six months for the condition to fully develop. One should seek immediate medication when the condition is fully developed as it can be very serious. There are many symptoms for this condition. Some of the symptoms are mood swings, trouble bonding with the baby, and difficulty in thinking and making decisions.

According to statistics, one out of every seven women develops PPD in the US. In case one feels depressed, it is important to see a doctor for diagnostic purposes. One has to explain to the doctor how they feel. The doctor will then develop a treatment plan after evaluating the symptoms. Antidepressants and psychotherapy are mostly used in treating the condition.

However, there are several ways of avoiding PPD. One of these ways is to hire a postpartum doula to provide company and help after delivery. These doulas are specialists in taking care of new mothers by talking and listening to them so that they do not feel lonely. They also help mothers to bond with their babies better and can catch any symptoms of PPD in advance and get the mother the help they need.

The work of doulas is to help mothers with their daily chores so that they can rest. The leading cause of PPD in mothers is lack of rest. They are always busy either taking care of their babies or working on laundry and cooking. As such, mothers are exposed to a lot of stress which may trigger depression. Doulas are there to prevent such scenarios.

For doulas to provide these services, they have to undergo special training. Midwives, obstetricians, family doctors and pediatricians can provide good referrals for doulas. Information about good doulas can also be obtained from women centers, churches, the internet, breastfeeding support groups, local family services agencies and local hospitals.

Having a doula should not prevent a mother from taking part in achieving full recovery. Exercising is one of the ways an individual can avoid PPD even if they have a doula. One is not required to engage in strenuous exercise since this could be dangerous. Some exercise one can engage in include walking and strolling with the baby around. It is also vital to eat a balanced diet.
