By Betty Gibson

When it comes to holistic health, there are many practices and treatments which reside under one umbrella. In most cases, , when desiring to harmonize mind body and spirit Torrance, basic Yoga practice is a good option. For, while more advanced types of yoga include a great deal of complicated movements, basic yoga only requires basic breathing and stretching techniques.

Whether attending a Yoga class or participating in a free style improvisational dance group, both have a lot to offer when it comes to freeing the mind. It is believed that through letting go and becoming one with the dance, individuals can become more alert and self-aware. Whereas, those participating in Yoga often have a goal of liberating the body and spirit while exercising the body.

While many individuals attend Yoga classes, others practice at home. Whereas, there are others whom are so dedicated that one can sit in meditation doing Yoga for hours in public venues. Whatever the case, it is not the location of practice but rather the quiet solitude, exercise and movement which benefits those involved in these activities.

While neither of these activities are an aspect of organized religion, it should be noted that Yoga is often considered the 6th School of Hinduism. As such, while not necessarily religious, many Yoga practitioners often feel a spiritual connection to the practice. Whereas, while some improvisational dancers do connect with a spiritual aspect, most of these type dance groups are not based in any aspect of religion.

It was centuries ago that Yoga first began as the 6th School of Hinduism in India. Later, the practice was introduced into the Western world by Yogis whom came to the United States and other locations to teach the practice. It was not until the 1980s that the practice became popular in many areas of the United States, Canada and Europe. At which time, the practice became better known as an aspect of Hindu mysticism and philosophy rather than religion.

While there have been a number of studies which have attempted to show the results of yoga on different health related issues such as heart disease, asthma, schizophrenia and cancer, results have been mixed. While this is the case, balancing and calming the mind has shown beneficial to concentration. Whereas, basic breathing, movement and stretching techniques have shown to assist with overcoming physical pain.

Goals vary by individual when it comes to the Western practice. Whereas, the historical and spiritual aspect is of one liberation. It should be noted that this refers to liberation of the mind, thus freeing the mind of thought through breathing and exercise. In most cases, individuals taking classes are attempting to find a balance between body, mind and spirit while also developing a stronger sense of focus.

As controlling the mind and body are important aspects of health, the practice can often be beneficial. As to whether or not different conditions and diseases can be cured in the process remains a mystery. Still, if the practice can help those dealing with these issues become more active, self-aware, self-confident and balanced, then most often it is time well spent.
