Without Reflex Therapy Portland Patients Often Suffer Continued Discomfort

By Raymond Olson

The use of different approaches, philosophy and methods to treat ill and injured people is as old as man. Healers have been part of society from the very beginning and there are numerous records of remarkable medical procedures that were performed centuries ago. Many of these ancient medical approaches and methods are still popular today. Reflexology is one of them. After reflex therapy Portland residents say that they feel better and much more relaxed.

Reflexology is classified as an alternative form of modern medicine. However, together with disciplines such as acupuncture and chiropractics, reflexology enjoys widespread support from patients across many countries and cultures. It is interesting to note that a significant percentage of practitioners in these fields are also qualified in traditional medicine. Patients are shying away from medication that pose the threat of dangerous side effects and treatment methods that are invasive.

The theory behind reflexology is not complicated. The practitioner applies pressure to very specific areas on the hands and feet, using his thumbs and fingers and employing a variety of techniques. Practitioners believe that this pressure will have a positive impact on other organs and body systems. The process does not involve the use of oils or lotions and patients experience no discomfort whatsoever.

The hands and the feet are divided into specific zones and each of these zones are directly related to specific body parts and organs. For example, problems with the sciatic nerves, lower back and the intestines are treated by applying pressure on the heel of the foot. Treatment opens an energy flow between the heel and the diseased or affected organs and body areas, stimulating relief or healing.

Reflexology cannot be used to diagnose diseases, although some discredited practitioners say that they can diagnose. Because it is not diagnostic in nature, reflexology is often chosen as complementary form of treatment by patients already diagnosed by a doctor. There is evidence that reflexology is effective in providing relief from anxiety and stress, especially in patients suffering from cancer, migraines, sinus problems and diabetes. Patients with PMS and heart problems also seem to benefit.

Critics are quick to point out that there is absolutely no scientific evidence that reflexology is an effective treatment method for any medical condition. They say that the only positive effect of reflexology is to help patients deal with stress and anxiety but that the same effect can be accomplished by means of a professional massage. Other than with other alternative medical treatment, such as chiropractics, medical insurance will not cover the cost of reflexology.

There are numerous institutions that offer training in this field. However, practitioners are not required to undergo formal training. Neither are they required to register as practitioners and their activities are not controlled by any formal and official body. It would be only fair to point out that many practitioners are voluntary members of organizations representing this field and they sign a code of conduct.

Yet reflexology remains highly popular and millions of patients seek treatment every year. Practitioners point out that their methods are totally safe and that the majority of their patients are satisfied with the results of treatment. The final choice, after all, lies with the patient.
