Long Island Sciatica Issues Helped With Chiropractic Therapy And ART

By Griselda Zerna Albao

Pain caused by injury or overuse of soft body tissue is very common. The body includes a network of tissues. Fascia, nerves, ligaments, tendons and muscles are all soft tissues. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body and often subject to compression from surrounding tissue. Long Island Active Release Technique is a patented therapy used by chiropractors to effectively relieve pain from sciatica and other soft tissue damage.

A doctor of chiropractic, P. Michael Leahy, DC, noticed symptoms of pain were often caused by changes in the soft body tissues. He came upon this realization while examining patients with his hands for regular chiropractic care. His hands could actually feel the tension and tightness in the soft tissue as he cared for his patients. He developed over five hundred very specific massaging movements that allowed him to locate and correct the source of pain.

As he became increasingly accomplished at these techniques, he patented what is now called the Active Release Technique. Next he set about providing his colleagues with training so more patients could find relief from his technique. Chiropractors who have taken his training can earn their certification in ART.

The body is a three dimensional complex system of skeletal, vascular and soft tissues. In the case of a muscle tear injury there can be a small gap or tear in the muscle tissue. Over time, scar tissue will develop to fill that gap. If there is other soft tissue in close proximity to the injured muscle, the scar tissue can spread and exacerbate the injury. If the scar tissue is near the sciatic nerve, it can impinge or compress that nerve with each movement.

With the use of ART, your chiropractor can locate the exact spot of the affected tissue. With his hands and manual exam he will utilize some ART massage movements to relieve the pain. Ask your chiropractor if he has taken the extra training and is ART certified.

Together with regular chiropractic visits, the use of ART has been successfully relieving pain for many patients. These types of injuries are not visible with normal imaging studies. They can be elusive and seem non specific without the use of ART. Patients no longer need to live with this pain. They can find relief with ART and chiropractic care.
